Head Girl Comment

Tuesday 7 December 2011

The school year is officially over. I am proud of the way all students have dealt with the unexpected interruptions and loss throughout the year. Everyone deserves a restful holiday while awaiting exam results!

CBS Canterbury Area served us well at Prizegiving. Thank you to those who helped make this happen. Well done to all recipients of prizes and those who were there to support them . A special Congratulations to Lucy Choi, Dux of 2011. I would also like to wish Rose Fowler all the best as Head of School for 2012 and Georgia Lentjes as Head of Acland.

It has been a memorable year in every respect and I thank all of those who supported me in my role as Head Girl. I have had an amazing year. Writing my final blog is tinged with emotion but as I have already said "don't cry because it is over, smile because it happened"

All the best everybody. Put yourselves forward and follow your dreams :)

Wow what a term! Let's hope the All Blacks do the Nationwide school timetable adjustment some justice!

The snow gave us an unplanned three day break from the school routine but placed further pressure in what has already been a crammed year. Term three will be remembered for strategic timetabling of internal assessments to ensure we had a continued supply of these!

The importance of derived grades in school exams had increased significance this year and we hope the extra preparation will have a positive effect on our external exams.

Tournament week  provided the opportunity for some "normal " out of classroom activities to proceed. This allowed both participation and pleasing results. With a very disrupted year it was great to be given the platform to put training and talent to the test. The results can be viewed in the subsequent school newsletters. There have  also been many other sporting successes of which we are proud. Congratulations Kristi Zarifeh for her National surfing title and Maddi Campbell for second in the U17 girl's Road Cycling Race at NZSS Championships in Levin.

The Staff verse Prefect netball game saw a victory for the Prefects! :) This was despite much hype  from the teachers and Mr Thew's preparation. Apart from the entertainment value we can all be assured Mr Thornhill will require some shooting practise before next year's game.

Sporting and Cultural photos went without a hitch despite the relocation to the school gymnasium. These can be ordered at the start of term four.

The year twelve leadership day at Lincoln University was a great success. The staff and prefects gained valuable insight into the possible choices for School Leaders in 2012. The day consisted of team activities and challenges. As this was my second year, knowing the solutions to the scenarios made it difficult to remain neutral! Despite this I came home exhausted. From what we saw and already knew, I'm sure the school will be in good hands.

All the best for term four. Only two weeks left in the classroom for the senior students. Make the most of this time, enjoy and plan to avoid regrets :)

Looking back over Term 2, it was great to consolidate and catch up after the disruptions in Term 1 . The earthquake on June 13 required us to have the afternoon and following day off school to ensure the buildings were safe for our return.
Open day was a success especially considering the earthquake damage and the subsequent changes in routine. As Year 13's in our last year at school it was great to see the next generation of which some will be taking our place.
A highlight of the term was the visit from the French Ambassador, Consulate and other French dignitaries. They presented us with a cheque for 27,000 Euros. The money was raised by Gymase Jean Sturm and donated to us. Pupils from the school were in New Zealand on a French exchange during the February earthquake.
Pupils from Year 13 at Southland Girls' High School sent over 200 zombie chews for our Year 13's. As you can imagine, these were well received. The generosity of other Schools in New Zealand and abroad in relation to the earthquake has been overwhelming.
The Netball game between our Prefects and Boys' High Monitors was entertaining to say the least. The final score still remains disputable :) Depending on who you ask it was either a draw of 1 goal difference. CGHS staff have now offered the Prefects a challenge on the Netball court. Details are under negotiation. This time we will have an official on hand to keep the score!
For the second time this year we had our Warm Fuzzy Friday. Over 500 anonymous messages accompanied by 50c mixtures were distributed. We anticipate to continue this tradition in Term 3. The Student Council ran a competition where they hid 50 popsicle sticks in the school grounds. Each stick enabled the finder a chance in the draw to win daily canteen vouchers and lift passes. 9WN won the pizza lunch for finding the most sticks.
Our annual book day saw a variety of book characters around school. The week was themed Mythology which saw the prefects dressing as Greek goddesses. Mrs Taylor lead the school as Zeus, The King of Gods.
With the holidays almost over we are about to embark on Term 3. Let's hope its without disruption, allowing us to focus on schoolwork and enjoy the success that follows.

With term two underway school life has resumed. I hope everyone is well rested, refreshed and pleased to be back :)  I am aware there have already been some pleasing successes so far. The stage challenge team gave an outstanding performance. Those who watched thought you were winners!
House spirit appears alive and well after the success of our Can Drive with Deans taking this one out.

Wednesday sport is again underway with good turnouts reported.

Congratulations to Grace Spoors for her New Zealand selection to compete at the Junior World Rowing Championships. Also congratulations to Amy Gore for her New Zealand selection to compete in the U15 Water polo Championships in Australia. To those that I haven't mentioned, do let me know. I am sure there are many other causes for celebration.

I would also like to mention the support we have had from many schools throughout New Zealand following the earthquake. As well as letters and emails, some schools have fundraised significant sums, with the money to be used at our discretion.  The support has been quite overwhelming and gratefully received.

The link block is now in action, just in time for the Winter. Don't forget the outside hike is no longer required! The annual Boys' High and Girls' High prefect netball dual is approaching.  It will take place at Girls' High on June 1st at lunchtime. The theme is currently under discussion, so more details to follow.  History suggests this will be very entertaining! See you all there!

Welcome back for the second time this year!

It's been a difficult month with so much tragedy surrounding us. Everyone has been affected to some degree, but together we can move forward with combined strength and courage.

Even though our school is not as we once knew it, we are fortunate to be able to return to the site. It is reassuring to know our main block is one of the safest buildings in Christchurch along with Christchurch Women’s' Hospital.

Sacrifices will be required by students, teachers and the school community. Teaching space is reduced and there will be alterations to sport, cultural and school events. However, rest assured the curriculum will be delivered and the Girls' High spirit will prevail.

Life sends us challenges from time to time but remember it's not the challenge that’s important rather how we deal with it  that counts.

Ella :)

Wednesday 9 February 2011

A big welcome to Year 9 and all returning students.  I am committed to making 2011 as successful as it can be. Remember success is proportional to effort!

Year 9's
You may be feeling a bit anxious and nervous but just remember this is not unexpected and you'll probably find your friends are feeling the same.

Handy hints to help make your transitions to Girls' High as smooth as possible:

- Only you know what you don't know. Therefore, if you have a question don't be afraid to ask. Existing students and teachers will be happy to help.

- Get involved! There are many opportunities, don't let these pass you by. You may find a new passion or continue with an existing one.

-Keep your eyes and ears open and attend meetings so you don't miss out!

-Respect is reciprocal. If you respect the school, the teachers and all within, you will find it comes back to you.

- Have fun and smile! Everything is better when you do :)

Year's 10,11,12 and 13
-Be kind to the year 9's - remember you were one once!

- You know the score. Use it to your advantage and success will follow.

- All the best for your studies and remember a balance of work, pleasure and achievement equals happiness!

Lip Sync Review

Congratulations to all those who participated in the lipsync last night. Your house spirit shone and well done to all those brave individuals, quote Mr Sawyer "one of the most popular characters was definitely Mufasa the dog. However the Prefects stole the show with their brilliant Michael Jackson piece, 2 bad." [beautifully choereographed by Hannah and Bridget Williams].

Let the high standard be continued next year!

Welcome Year 9      :D
Pondering what to write, I figured you might need a helping hand.

Tips and Tricks for being Year 9:
1. Stick to the left side of the corridor. Goodness knows who (or what) you might run into!
2. Get involved! If you find out what you really have an interest for now, it will make things a lot easier later.
3. Use your locker, your bag doesn't need to be that big ;) but you'll figure it out.
4. Smile at your teachers, you'll find that 90-100% of the time they will smile back.
5. You'll grow into that blazer, don't worry. Then it's your mum who has to worry when you grow out of it!
