Career of the Week – Estimator

Estimators or Quantity Surveyors are responsible for managing the finances related to a construction project. They must also manage negotiations over labour disputes and must survey the land on which construction will occur to determine the impacts of the build.

Estimators need to possess a New Zealand Diploma in Construction at Level 6 with specialisations in Quantity Surveying. Having work experience or experience in a similar area and a driver’s license are useful in finding employment as an Estimator.

To become an Estimator, NCEA STEM subjects such as the Sciences, Technology subjects, and Maths will give you useful skills.

 

SKILLS:

  • ability to read blueprints to determine project specifications

  • good interpersonal and negotiation skills

  • confidence writing financial reports and reviewing documents

  • accurately estimating cost of materials and labour

  • accurately valuing completed construction projects

 

SALARY:

$56k – $184k/YEAR
