Career of the Week – Stevedore

Freight Handlers and Stevedores operate a variety of heavy machinery to load, unload, tally and stow the cargo of ships, aeroplanes, trains and large on-road vehicles. This is done using braces and heavy machinery. Freight Handlers and Stevedores must ensure that all materials are secure in this process.

All Stevedores must possess a full drivers license. It is also often necessary for Stevedores to be able to pass both a medical assessment and a drug test.

Useful NCEA subjects for anyone wanting to be a Stevedore to take are English and Maths.

SKILLS:

• Accurately record operational or production data

• Confidence operating heavy machinery

• Attention to detail when marking materials for identification

• Ability to do physically demanding work

• Health and safety focus
