Interested in language, accuracy and helping turn spoken words into clear written information? Are you someone who listens carefully, pays attention to detail and enjoys working independently? If so, a career as a transcriptionist may be for you.
Transcriptionists record and write transcripts of court hearings and trials. They may create subtitles of live or recorded audio-visual media for Deaf people or for broadcasting.
Transcriptionists may do some or all of the following:

record information from legal proceedings

proofread documents, records, or other files to ensure accuracy

enter information into databases or software programs
-
provide information to the general public
-
process forensic or legal evidence in accordance with procedures

maintain the order of legal documents
-
file documents or records
-
prepare legal documents
-
type documents
-
verify accuracy of records
How can you get into this job?
You can usually learn to become a transcriptionist on the job. Having a qualification or some experience can also be helpful.
You need:

Good typing speed and accuracy.

You may also need a New Zealand Certificate in Medical Transcription and Editing (Level 4) or experience in a similar job.
