What extracurricular activities or clubs do you participate in at school, and what do you find most enjoyable about them? –
Throughout my years at Christchurch Girls’ High School | Te Kura O Hine Waiora, I’ve participated in many extracurricular activities within the school that broadened my friendships and experiences. I’ve been involved in the school choir, Cantrices, rowing, volleyball, various school committees, and school productions. However, my favourite and most memorable activity that I’ve participated in since Year 9 would have to be our school’s social football team. Joining social football helped me to feel a strong sense of belonging within our kura as I was settling into high school, allowing me to form long-lasting friendships with the people who surrounded me day to day. Some of my favourite memories have come from being a part of the social footy team, as we always prioritised having fun and enjoying ourselves during games, constantly making jokes together whilst screaming encouragement at each other as someone got their first goal. Having a positive team around you in sports or any extracurricular will always be a highlight of my time at our kura, and I encourage anyone joining our kura to get involved/make the most of the many opportunities that will come your way in the next 5 years!
Can you describe some positive or memorable experiences you’ve had at CGHS –
In the last 4 years at our kura, I’ve made so many positive memories in and out of class during house day celebrations and lunch time chats, but one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had would have to be when I performed with Deans House in the 2023 school LipSync. Anyone at CGHS would know that LipSync is one of the biggest school events of the year, as everyone gets dressed up for their house’s/group’s theme and packs into the CBHS auditorium for a huge night of lip-syncing and dancing. In 2023, I participated in the Deans House lip sync with the theme of Justin Bieber and his different eras. There were 5 of us who had been chosen to play Justin Bieber for our year group’s dance. My year group (Year 10) had the song “Boyfriend”. This night created so many positive memories for me as I got to dress up as JB and dance onstage with lots of girls from my year group, whilst my friends/school watched and cheered in the audience for everyone onstage. Lipsync is always the best place to create fun memories as you spend weeks prior practising with your friends, leading up to the big event, sharing all the laughs with your entire school.
What are your favourite subjects at school and why do you enjoy them? –
This year, my favourite subjects at school have been Painting and Printmaking (Art) and Music, as they’re the creative subjects that allow me to develop my artistic/musical skills whilst producing an end product through my art panels and solo performances. I’ve really enjoyed both Art and Music since beginning at CGHS, as they’re extremely rewarding and fun subjects where you’re surrounded by your friends as you spend the year working towards your own personal goals and projects, receiving help when needed from your teachers. I’ve personally received some of my best marks and feedback from my artistic subjects as they’re where I’m able to thrive through performance and hands-on work, also being provided a large amount of time in the year to work on my chosen pieces/artworks. I also really enjoy Art and Music as their classrooms and lessons are always a time to focus and relax as you work in a quiet environment (that also lets you listen to music!). These subjects have always been my favourite ever since I was in primary school, and will continue to be a part of my life as I pursue a performance/The Arts-based future!
