The truth is, quality beats quantity every time. Each application takes effort, and deadlines have a habit of sneaking up when you least expect them. The trick is working out which scholarships are genuinely right for you, rather than chasing every opportunity that appears on your screen.

Know yourself first
Scholarships aren’t one-size-fits-all, and what works brilliantly for one student might be completely wrong for another. Before you dive into applications, take a moment to think about where you’re heading.

Having an idea of your direction (and always checking the eligibility criteria) will save you from wasting time on opportunities that aren’t actually open to you.
Think about what you genuinely need from a scholarship too. Most people immediately think of money, and fair enough; reducing the cost of your education is always valuable. But scholarships can offer so much more than just cash. Some include accommodation, which could be a game-changer if you’re moving away from home. Others might offer mentorship, work placements, travel opportunities, or access to exclusive networks. What matters most to you right now?
And here’s something worth considering: what do you want, even if you don’t strictly need it? Imagine a scholarship that includes a placement at your dream company. Even if you’re financially comfortable, that experience could be priceless. Sometimes the extras turn out to be the real prize.
Understand your strengths
Scholarship applications aren’t just forms to fill in. They’re your chance to show a selection panel why you’re the right person for that opportunity. Most applications will ask you to demonstrate something: maybe your academic achievements, your community involvement, leadership roles you’ve held, or the soft skills you’ve developed.

Speaking of challenges, don’t overlook equity-based scholarships. These exist to level the playing field for students who’ve faced disadvantage. Living in a rural or remote area, coming from a migrant background, being First Nations, being under-represented in your field of study, or navigating difficult family circumstances – all of these could make you eligible for specific scholarships. The world recognises that not everyone starts from the same place, and that talent and potential exist everywhere; a helping hand could make all the difference to many people.
Research thoroughly
Once you’ve got a clear picture of yourself and what you’re looking for, it’s time to start your search. But before you rush into applications, do your homework on each scholarship. Not every opportunity is what it seems at first glance.
Check who’s offering the scholarship. Unfortunately, there are dodgy opportunities out there that look too good to be true because, well, they are. Stick with scholarships from reputable sources such as established universities and education institutions, well-known businesses, recognised organisations. If you’re unsure, a quick web search can usually tell you whether something’s legitimate before handing over your personal details.
Read the eligibility criteria carefully – and we mean really carefully. There’s no point crafting a brilliant application if you don’t actually tick all the boxes. Age restrictions, residency requirements, specific study fields, minimum academic standards etc. If any of these don’t match your situation, move on. It’s not about you not being good enough; it’s about finding the right fit.
Pay close attention to the terms and conditions too. Many scholarships come with strings attached, and you need to know what you’re signing up for. You might be required to spend the money only on specific things like textbooks or accommodation. Some scholarships require you to study particular subjects or maintain certain grades. Others might ask you to attend events or complete volunteer work. Read through everything and make sure you’re genuinely comfortable with all the requirements. Breaking scholarship terms can mean having to repay the money, which is the last thing anyone wants.
Finally, check what the scholarship actually offers. Does it match what you need? That generous accommodation scholarship sounds fantastic until you realise you’re planning to live at home for the next few years. Make sure the benefits align with your actual circumstances and plans.
Apply strategically
By the time you’re ready to apply, you should have narrowed down your list to scholarships that genuinely suit you. You know they’re legitimate, you meet the criteria, you’re happy with the terms, and the benefits match your needs. Now it’s time to put together applications that stand out.
Take the time to tailor each application to that specific scholarship. Generic applications are easy to spot, and they rarely succeed. Show that you’ve understood what the scholarship values and explain clearly why you’re a great match. Remember to provide any additional documents or evidence with your application before pressing submit.
Keep track of everything. Create a spreadsheet with deadlines, requirements, and what you’ve submitted. Nothing’s worse than missing out because a deadline crept up on you. Build in some buffer time too, that way you won’t leave everything until the last minute.
