Service Award May ’25 Update

Term Two is here and we’re kicking things off with a bang!

May is Youth Volunteering Week, a time to rally your school, take action, and show Aotearoa the power of young people doing good From 19–25 May, every hour you volunteer and log will help your school climb the leaderboard, and you could even win an SVA prize pack!

This month we’re also spotlighting SDG 15: Life on Land which is all about protecting the whenua, restoring ecosystems, and caring for the plants, animals, and wild places that make Aotearoa so special. Whether you’re planting trees, picking up rubbish, or raising awareness, your mahi matters.

Remember, volunteering is anything you do to give back. No matter how big or small. Help out at school, support your whānau, do something for your community… just remember to log it on the SVA Platform!

In this newsletter, you’ll find everything you need to get involved in Youth Volunteering Week, ideas for taking care of the land, and inspiration to keep your momentum going this term. Let’s get into it

Which school will come out on top?

Youth Volunteering Week is all about showing how much of a difference students like you can make. It’s a chance to get out there, give back, and do something good for your school or community. Whether that’s helping at an event, running a fundraiser, picking up rubbish, or just lending a hand where it’s needed.

From 19–25 May, every hour you log through the SVA Service Award helps your school climb the national leaderboard in the ultimate volunteering challenge

And it’s not just about which school is the biggest. It’s based on how many hours are logged per student, so every person makes a difference.

What’s up for grabs?
Top 3 Schools (by average hours per student):

  • SVA prize pack

  • A visit from the SVA team

  • Featured on our social media

Top 10 Individual Volunteers:

  • SVA prize pack

  • Shout-out in our national newsletter

To keep things fair for schools of all sizes, we’re using a per-student average. That means we divide the total hours logged by your school’s roll, so every student’s contribution counts equally, whether your school has 50 people or 2000. This should average out the playing field!

Log your hours at https://volunteer.sva.org.nz/
Then spread the word, challenge your mates, and help your school take the win

Let’s see who’s got the strongest volunteer spirit in the country

SDG of the Month

Learn more about SDG 15

This month, we’re focusing on SDG 15: Life on Land, a global goal to protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of our ecosystems, forests, and biodiversity. It’s all about taking care of the whenua, the wildlife that call it home, and the natural spaces that sustain us.

A healthy environment supports a healthy future. When we give back to the land, by restoring native habitats, reducing waste, or learning about our local ecosystems,  we’re helping to protect Aotearoa for generations to come. Your actions, no matter how small, can make a big difference to the planet

Want to be part of the solution? Here are some ways you can take action:

Do a Local Clean-Up – Organise a group to pick up litter around your school, local park, or beach. Every bit counts.

Plant for the Future – Get involved in a tree planting day, start a native garden at your kura or volunteer at a local plant nursery.

Reduce Waste – Set up composting or recycling bins and encourage others to minimise single-use plastic.

Learn About Local Species – Research and share information about native birds, plants, or insects in your area. Awareness is a powerful first step. Use iNatrlist for help!

Support Local Conservation Projects – Volunteer with groups working to restore nature, protect waterways, or care for wildlife.

Take Action at School – Start a sustainability group or host an eco-themed event!

Every small action supports the land we live on — and the life it holds. Learn more at sva.org.nz/sdgs
