Māori scholarship programme Te Paewai o Te Rangi (Previously known as HIWA)
What is Te Paewai o Te Rangi?
Te Paewai o Te Rangi is a 5 day scholarship programme for Māori students who are in their final year of study at a NZ secondary school/wharekura living outside the Wellington Region. The purpose of this programme is for them to experience being a student here at Victoria University as well as living in Wellington City. Throughout the week students will attend different workshops with key staff on campus, explore halls of residence, connect with on-campus support, and explore all the cool things you can do in Wellington (and they’ll get to attend Open Day). There is an application process and successful students will be selected to attend the programme.
When and where is it?
The programme takes place from Tuesday 20th August to Saturday 24th August at the Kelburn Campus, Wellington. Students will be staying at Joan Stevens Hall (132 the Terrace) for the duration of the programme.
Who is eligible?
Students must meet the following criteria to be eligible for the programme:

Be of Māori descent

Be on track to achieving University Entrance

Be in their final year (Year 13) at a New Zealand Secondary School/Wharekura based outside of the Wellington Region (e.g – Wellington central, Hutt Valley, Porirua)

Be available to attend the entire program on the given dates (20 – 24th August 2024)
Does it cost the student?
No, this programme will be paid for (flights, accommodation, food etc.). They will need to bring money if they want to buy other things.
Application Process

Please ask students to fill in the form Te Paewai o Te Rangi Programme (2024) (office.com)

They will then need to email me, Tayla (tayla.petera-gerrard@vuw.ac.nz), with a copy of their academic transcript and a character reference (a teacher, employer etc.).
